Homemade washing-up liquid take #2 with soap nuts

The first washing-up liquid I made came out a bit watery and lumpy, didn’t bubble and left glasses a bit smeary so I decided to try a different recipe.

I got the recipe for this attempt from a youtube video. It uses soapnuts and was very easy to do! It involved boiling up 1 cup of soap nuts in 6 cups of water for about 20 mins. The water goes cloudy, a slightly orange colour and smells kind of earthy. Then I let it cool down completely, filtered the soap nuts out with a muslin cloth lined colander and then bottled it up. I reused an old olive oil bottle to store it, ready for decanting into a smaller bottle I have by the sink.

I’ve used it a few times now and it definitely bubbles up a bit more than the last one and isn’t at all lumpy which is good. But when comparing to one from a company, it still doesn’t bubble up as much so does feel a bit like I’m washing stuff up in water, and it isn’t as strong so I have to use a lot more for one washing-up bowl.

Overall I would say this washing-up liquid is good if you want a very mild one! Personally I’m still going to be on the lookout for a stronger recipe.
